# Essaouira vs Marrakech: which should you visit (or both)?

Marrakech and Essaouira are only about three hours apart, but they feel like different worlds. Here’s how to choose — or, better still, do both.

## The quick verdict

Choose **Marrakech** for an intense, sensory city break: souks, palaces, rooftop bars and a buzzing medina. Choose **Essaouira** for a laid-back coastal escape: sea breeze, fresh seafood, surfing and a walkable, relaxed old town. Many travellers combine the two, using Essaouira to unwind after Marrakech.

## Vibe

Marrakech is loud, vibrant and sometimes overwhelming — bargaining in the souks, scooters in the alleys, the spectacle of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Essaouira is mellow: a smaller, breezier medina you can explore without the hustle, plus a working fishing port and long Atlantic beach.

## Weather

This is a big one. In summer, Marrakech regularly tops 38–40°C, while Essaouira stays in the mid-20s thanks to the ocean. If you’re travelling between June and August, Essaouira is far more comfortable.

## Beaches & activities

Marrakech is inland — no beach. Essaouira’s long sandy bay is ideal for walks, kitesurfing and windsurfing, though the wind means it’s more about watersports than sunbathing. Marrakech wins for nightlife, shopping and day trips to the Atlas Mountains.

## Prices

Both offer everything from cheap riads to five-star luxury. Marrakech has more high-end and party options; Essaouira’s riads tend to feel better value for their charm. Compare live rates before you book either.

## How to combine them

A popular route: 3–4 nights in Marrakech, then a 2.5-hour drive (or shared transfer) to Essaouira for 2–3 nights to decompress by the sea before flying home.
