Most bad hotel experiences — and overspending — trace back to a handful of avoidable booking mistakes. Dodge these nine and you'll pay less and enjoy more.

## 1\. Booking on the first site you check

Prices for the same room vary across platforms. Booking without comparing leaves money on the table — a comparison search is the easy fix.

## 2\. Ignoring the neighbourhood

The hotel can be perfect and the area wrong. Research where to stay (nightlife vs quiet, beach vs town) _before_ picking a property — it’s the decision that most affects your trip.

## 3\. Not reading recent reviews

A great average score can hide a recent slide. Sort reviews by newest, look for repeated complaints, and filter by your traveller type.

## 4\. Comparing headline rates, not totals

Taxes, city and “resort fees” can turn a cheaper-looking room into the dearer one. Always compare the final, all-in price.
