Zanzibar packs a lot into a small island: a UNESCO old town, world-class beaches and some of the Indian Ocean’s best snorkelling. How long you need depends on whether you want a beach break, a culture-and-sea mix, or a deeper exploration.

## The short answer

**Five to seven days** is ideal for most travellers: enough for a day or two in Stone Town plus a proper beach stay, with time for one or two excursions. If Zanzibar is an add-on to a Tanzania safari, **three full days** still gives you a satisfying taste.

## 3 days: a quick taste

- **Day 1:** Stone Town — the spice market, the old fort, sunset at Forodhani Gardens.
- **Day 2:** Transfer to a northern beach (Nungwi or Kendwa) for swimming and a sunset dhow cruise.
- **Day 3:** A half-day spice tour or a snorkelling trip before flying out.

## 5 days: the sweet spot

Add two nights so you can slow down: a full beach day, a Safari Blue boat trip (sandbanks, snorkelling and a seafood lunch), and time to wander Stone Town’s alleys without rushing.

## 7 days: beach + culture + nature

A week lets you split your stay between two coasts — say the lively north (Nungwi/Kendwa) and the calmer east (Paje/Jambiani) — and add Jozani Forest to see the red colobus monkeys, plus a day trip to Prison Island.

## How to split your stay

Many visitors base themselves in one beach area and day-trip from there. If you want variety, two bases work well: a few nights up north for nightlife and easy swimming, then the east coast for kitesurfing and a quieter vibe.
