# How to find the cheapest hotel: 9 booking tips that actually work

Finding the cheapest hotel isn't luck — it's a handful of repeatable habits. Here are the tactics that genuinely move the price, and the popular "hacks" that don't.

The short version

-   Compare every booking site for the same hotel — prices vary 15–30%.
-   Be flexible by a few days; weekends and peak season cost most.
-   Look one neighbourhood out from the prime area.
-   Free cancellation lets you rebook if the price drops.

## 1\. Compare every site, not just one

The same room is often listed at different prices across booking platforms, and no single site is always cheapest. A comparison search shows them side by side so you book the lowest — this is the single biggest lever, and the reason comparison sites exist.

## 2\. Be flexible with your dates

Shifting your stay by a day or two — especially off the weekend — can cut the rate noticeably. Travelling in shoulder season rather than peak is the biggest date-based saving of all.

## 3\. Look one area out

The prime beach strip or old-town square always costs most. A hotel one neighbourhood back is often far cheaper for a short walk — and sometimes nicer and quieter.

## 4\. Book with free cancellation, then watch the price

Reserve a refundable rate early to lock in a room, then keep an eye out: if the price drops closer to your dates, rebook at the lower rate and cancel the old booking.

## 5\. Don’t assume “last minute” is cheapest

Sometimes last-minute deals appear, but for popular destinations and peak dates, waiting usually means higher prices and worse availability. Book early for peak, gamble late only in low season.

## 6\. Check the total, including taxes and fees

Compare the final price with all taxes and resort/city fees, not the headline rate. A “cheaper” room can end up dearer once fees are added.

## 7\. Consider room-only vs breakfast/half-board

Breakfast-included can be great value — or a markup over a nearby café. In remote or all-inclusive spots, board saves money; in walkable towns, room-only plus eating out is often cheaper.

**Myth check:** Browsing in "incognito mode" to dodge price tracking makes little real difference today. Flexibility and comparison save money; incognito mostly doesn't.

## 8\. Use the map, not just the list

Sorting by price on a map reveals well-rated, cheaper hotels just outside the obvious cluster that a plain list buries.

## 9\. Read recent reviews before you chase the lowest price

The cheapest room is no bargain if it’s noisy or far from everything. Balance price against recent guest scores and location.
