Ella is the postcard of Sri Lanka's hill country: misty tea slopes, the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak and the dramatic Ella Gap framing the lowlands far below. The big decision is whether to stay in the lively little town or in a hillside hotel where the view is the whole experience.

Quick picks

- **Best for the view:** hillside boutique hotels facing Ella Gap.
- **Best for convenience:** Ella town — cafés, bars, train station.
- **Prices:** guesthouses from ~$15, view hotels ~$50–120+.

## Ella town — walkable & social

The compact town along the main street is where the cafés, rooftop bars, tour operators and the famous train station sit. Stay here for walkability, a sociable backpacker-meets-flashpacker scene and easy access to the train. Plenty of friendly guesthouses keep it affordable.

## The hillsides — rooms with a view

Ella’s signature stays are perched on the surrounding tea slopes, with infinity pools and terraces gazing into the Ella Gap. **98 Acres Resort & Spa**, built among a working tea estate, is the standout; many smaller boutique hotels and villas offer the same valley views for less. You’ll need a tuk-tuk into town, but you wake up to one of Sri Lanka’s best views.

The Nine Arch Bridge — one of the walks that make Ella worth more than a quick stop.

**Tip:** Book a hillside hotel with a south-facing room or pool for the Ella Gap view — confirm the orientation, as not every room looks the right way.

## Getting there (and the famous train)

The scenic train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya to Ella is a highlight in itself — book reserved seats ahead in high season. Staying near the centre makes arrival and onward travel easy.

## Ella FAQ

### How many days in Ella?

Two nights lets you do Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge and a tea estate without rushing.

### Town or hillside?

Hillside for the view and tranquillity; town for walkability, food and the train. Many split a short stay between both.
