Essaouira is small enough to walk across, but where you sleep still shapes the whole trip: a riad inside the ramparts is a world away from a pool resort in the dunes. Here's how the four main areas compare — and which one fits your kind of holiday.

## The medina — stay inside the walls

For most visitors, the medina is the answer. Within the ramparts you’re steps from the souks, the fishing port, art galleries and the best restaurants — and you sleep in a **riad**, a traditional house built around a central courtyard. It’s atmospheric, walkable and car-free.

The medina suits culture lovers, foodies and first-timers. The only trade-offs: rooms can be compact, and you’ll carry bags through pedestrian lanes (riads arrange porters).

## The beach — Boulevard Mohammed V

Just south of the ramparts, the long Atlantic beach is lined with hotels and surf schools. Stay here for sea views, easy access to windsurfing and kitesurfing, and a pool. The famous Essaouira wind makes it more of a watersports beach than a sunbathing one — bear that in mind.

## Quartier des Dunes — quiet pool resorts

North of town, the dunes district is where the calmer 4–5★ resorts sit, with gardens, pools and more shelter from the wind. It’s a 10–15 minute drive or taxi from the medina, so it suits travellers who want resort comfort and quiet over walkable buzz — good for families.

**Wind note:** If you want calm sunbathing rather than watersports, the sheltered dunes resorts north of town are far more comfortable than the exposed main beach.

## Diabat — the surf village

Across the dunes to the south, Diabat is a laid-back village with a surf-and-yoga feel and budget guesthouses. It’s quieter and cheaper, with a short hop into town — ideal if you’re here to surf and chill rather than wander the medina each evening.
