Jericoacoara — "Jeri" — is a former fishing village turned bohemian beach idyll on Brazil's wild north-east coast, where the streets are sand, there are no street lights by design, and everyone gathers on the Sunset Dune at dusk. It's remote, magical, and small enough that where you stay is really about the village itself.

## Stay in the village (the vila)

Jeri is tiny and car-free at its heart — sandy lanes lined with pousadas, restaurants, caipirinha bars and kitesurf schools. Almost anywhere in the village is a short barefoot walk from the beach, the famous Sunset Dune (Duna do Pôr do Sol) and the nightlife. This is where you want to be: pick a pousada by budget and how close you want to be to the seafront versus the quieter edges.

Stylish boutique pousadas (such as **Vila Kalango** and **Essenza**) sit near the beach; plenty of charming mid-range and budget pousadas fill the lanes behind.

**Tip:** Streets are deep sand — pack light and wear sandals. Pousadas can arrange a porter or buggy for luggage from the village entrance.

## Getting there

Part of Jeri’s charm is how hard it is to reach: it’s a 4x4 transfer across the dunes from Jijoca, after a flight to Jericoacoara (Cruz) or a long drive from Fortaleza. Factor the transfer into your plans — and once you arrive, you won’t need a car.

## When to visit

July to January brings the reliable winds that make Jeri a world kitesurfing capital; the green season (February–May) is calmer and quieter. Sunsets on the dune are the daily ritual year-round.
