Nizwa is the gateway to Oman's interior: a historic oasis town with a great round fort, a famous Friday goat market and the dramatic Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams mountains on its doorstep. Where you stay depends on whether you want the town and its souq, or a mountain eyrie above the heat.

Quick picks

- **For the fort & souq:** hotels in/near Nizwa town.
- **For mountain cool & views:** Jebel Akhdar resorts.
- **Prices:** town apartments from ~$50; mountain resorts premium.

## Nizwa town — fort, souq & convenience

Staying in town puts you near the restored Nizwa Fort, the atmospheric souq (silver, pottery, dates) and the Friday livestock market. It’s the practical base for exploring the interior — Bahla, Jabreen Castle, Misfat al Abriyeen — and for an early start to the mountains. Comfortable hotel apartments and mid-range hotels (e.g. **Antares Hotel Apartments**, **Golden Tulip Nizwa**) cover most budgets.

## Jebel Akhdar — the mountain option

An hour or so away (4WD required for the ascent), the Saiq Plateau on Jebel Akhdar is dramatically cooler, with terraced rose farms and canyon-edge views. This is where Oman’s headline luxury sits — **Alila Jabal Akhdar** and **Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar** — perched over vast gorges. Choose the mountain for scenery and cooler air; choose town for culture and value.

**Tip:** Many travellers do both — a night in Nizwa for the fort and souq (ideally a Thursday so you catch the Friday market), then a night up on Jebel Akhdar for the views and cool air.

## When to visit

October to April is the comfortable season; summer is very hot in town (the mountains stay cooler). The souq and goat market are busiest — and best — on Friday mornings.

## Nizwa FAQ

### Is Nizwa worth staying overnight?

Yes — it lets you catch the Friday market early and explore the interior without a long round-trip from Muscat (about 1.5 hours away).

### Do you need a 4WD?

For Nizwa town, no. For the ascent to Jebel Akhdar, a 4WD is required at the checkpoint.
