Zanzibar can be a barefoot-luxury splurge or a surprisingly affordable beach escape. Here’s what a trip actually costs, and where to save.

## Daily budget at a glance

-   **Backpacker:** $40–70 per day — guesthouses, local food, shared transfers.
-   **Mid-range:** $90–180 per day — a comfortable 4★ beach hotel, a mix of restaurants, a couple of excursions.
-   **Luxury:** $300+ per day — 5★ resorts, private transfers, spa and fine dining.

## Hotels

Accommodation is the biggest variable. Simple guesthouses start around **$36–60** a night, comfortable beachfront 4★ hotels run **$120–250**, and 5★ resorts begin near **$300**. Booking a few months ahead for the June–October peak makes a real difference.

## Food and drink

Local dishes (Zanzibar pizza, fresh seafood, biryani) cost just a few dollars at street stalls and casual spots. Resort restaurants are far pricier, so mixing in local eateries keeps the budget down. Alcohol is relatively expensive as the island is predominantly Muslim.

## Getting around

Shared minibuses (dala-dalas) are cheapest but slow. Private transfers from the airport to the north coast cost roughly $40–60 per car. Renting a scooter or hiring a driver for a day are popular middle-ground options.

## Excursions

Budget around $20–60 each for the classics: a spice farm tour, Stone Town walking tour, Safari Blue, or a sunset dhow cruise. Booking ahead often beats arranging them at your hotel.

## Where the savings are

-   Travel in the shoulder months (January–February or November) for lower rates.
-   Choose the east coast (Paje, Jambiani) for better value than the busy north.
