Best riads in Essaouira — and what a riad stay is really like

Staying in a riad is half the reason to visit Essaouira. These traditional houses, built inward around a courtyard, trade big-hotel anonymity for character: carved cedar, tadelakt walls, a sunny rooftop and a homemade breakfast. Here's what to expect — and the best riads at each price.

At a glance

  • What it is: a traditional house around a central courtyard, usually small and characterful.
  • Best for: atmosphere, location in the medina, personal service.
  • Budget riads: from ~$30; boutique ~$90–160; palace 5★ from ~$280.

What a riad stay is really like

Riads are intimate — often just 6 to 15 rooms — arranged over two or three floors around a courtyard, with a rooftop terrace for breakfast and sunset. Service is personal (the host often greets you by name), breakfast is typically included and homemade, and you’re in the heart of the car-free medina.

The trade-offs are part of the charm: rooms vary in size and light (interior rooms can be dark), there’s rarely a pool, and you walk through the lanes to reach the door. For most travellers, the atmosphere far outweighs this.

How to choose the right riad

Tip: Travelling with luggage? Riads can't be reached by car — most arrange a porter with a cart to meet you at the nearest medina gate.

Riads in Essaouira FAQ

Are riads good for families?

Some are; many are better suited to couples. Look for a riad that explicitly welcomes children or has family rooms, or consider a dunes resort with a pool.

Do riads have pools?

Rarely — most are small medina houses. The grander ones (e.g. L’Heure Bleue) have rooftop plunge pools; for a real pool, look at the beach or dunes hotels.
