Best time to visit Essaouira: weather, wind & crowds

Essaouira has a milder, breezier climate than the rest of Morocco — a relief in summer when Marrakech bakes, but worth understanding before you book.
The short answer
The best time to visit Essaouira is late spring to early autumn (April to October) for warm, sunny days. If you’re coming to kitesurf or windsurf, the windiest, most reliable months are April to August. For calmer beach days, the wind eases in autumn.
The wind factor
Essaouira is nicknamed the “Windy City of Africa”. The famous Atlantic breeze keeps temperatures pleasant and makes it a world-class watersports spot — but it also means the beach can feel blustery when you just want to sunbathe. If a calm beach day matters most to you, the sheltered dunes resorts north of town are a better bet.
Month by month
April–June: Warm, sunny, windy — ideal for watersports and sightseeing, before the summer crowds.
July–August: Peak season. Moroccan and European holidaymakers fill the town; book well ahead. Temperatures stay comfortable thanks to the sea breeze.
September–October: Arguably the sweet spot — warm sea, lighter winds, thinner crowds and softening prices.
November–March: Cooler and quieter. Days are still often sunny but evenings are chilly; you’ll find the lowest hotel rates of the year.
Festivals
The Gnaoua World Music Festival in late June transforms the town with concerts in the streets and squares. It’s spectacular but accommodation books out months ahead and prices spike — plan early if you want to be there.
When prices are lowest
Rates peak in July–August and during the Gnaoua festival, and bottom out in winter. Spring and autumn offer the best balance of good weather and reasonable prices.
