Zanzibar is generally a safe, welcoming destination, and the vast majority of visitors have no trouble at all. As with anywhere, a little awareness — about petty theft, local customs and where you stay — goes a long way. Here's an honest, area-by-area rundown.

The general picture
Violent crime against tourists is rare. The realistic risks are opportunistic — bag-snatching, items taken from an unattended beach towel, or overpaying touts. Treat Zanzibar like any unfamiliar destination: don’t flash valuables, use the hotel safe, and keep an eye on your belongings.
Area by area
Stone Town. Safe and atmospheric by day. After dark, stick to busier streets and the seafront; the labyrinth of quiet alleys is best avoided alone late at night. Friendly “papasi” (touts) will offer tours and taxis — a polite, firm “no thank you” works.
Nungwi & Kendwa (north). Lively and well set up for tourists; the main caution is the usual beach-valuables awareness and drinking sensibly around the nightlife.
Paje, Jambiani & the east. Quiet and laid-back, with a strong traveller community. Very relaxed; the same petty-theft common sense applies.
Women travellers
Many women travel Zanzibar solo without issues. Dressing modestly away from the beach, being firm with persistent touts, and using reputable transfers rather than wandering alone late at night are the main sensible steps.

- Inflated taxi/transfer fares — agree the price before you get in, or book transfers through your hotel.
- “Free” spice-tour add-ons that aren’t free — confirm what’s included.
