The corniche & riverbank
The east-bank corniche is the convenient base — walkable to the souq, the train station and boat jetties, with hotels ranging from simple to grand. The crown jewel is the historic Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, perched above the river with the view that inspired Agatha Christie. Even if you don’t stay, its terrace is worth a sunset drink.
Nubian villages — colour & welcome
For atmosphere, cross to the west bank or to Gharb Seheil, where Nubian guesthouses painted in vivid blues and yellows offer warm hospitality, home-cooked meals and a real sense of place — often for very little. This is many travellers’ favourite Aswan memory.
Elephantine Island
In the middle of the river, palm-fringed Elephantine Island has small guesthouses among Nubian hamlets — peaceful, car-free and a short boat hop from the corniche. Lovely for slowing down, if you don’t mind relying on little ferries.
