Where to stay in Baños, Ecuador: best hotels & spa stays

Wedged in a green gorge below an active volcano, Baños de Agua Santa is Ecuador's adventure and spa capital: thermal baths, waterfalls, canyoning, and that famous swing at the "end of the world". Where you stay is a choice between the buzzy, walkable centre and the quieter hillsides with a view.

Quick picks

  • Best for convenience: the town centre — baths, tours, restaurants on foot.
  • Best for views & calm: hillside hotels above town.
  • Prices: hostels from ~$10, mid-range ~$40–70, spa hotels higher.

The town centre — walk to everything

Baños is compact and easily walkable. Stay in the grid of the centre and you’re minutes from the Termas de la Virgen thermal baths, the tour agencies (rafting, canyoning, biking the Ruta de las Cascadas) and a lively café and restaurant scene. This is the practical, sociable base for most travellers, with everything from $10 hostels to comfortable mid-range hotels.

The hillsides — views & spa calm

Above town, hillside hotels trade walkability for panoramas of the gorge and Tungurahua volcano, plus quiet and spa facilities. Luna Runtún, perched high on the mountainside, is the landmark luxury address with thermal pools and valley views; other small lodges dot the slopes. Choose these to unwind and soak in the scenery.

Tip: If you'll do early-morning tours and late dinners, stay central. If you want a romantic, restful base with a view (and don't mind a taxi into town), go hillside.

Adventure on the doorstep

Most visitors come to do things: the Ruta de las Cascadas waterfall route, the Casa del Árbol swing, canyoning, rafting and the baths to recover afterwards. A central base makes booking and starting these easiest.
